Madison WI Shooting Today-Police Investigate Reported Gunfire Near State Street as Firearm Is Recovered

An investigation is underway in Madison, Wisconsin, after police responded to reports of gunfire early Tuesday morning, September 1, with officers later recovering a firearm near the scene. Authorities say no injuries were reported in connection with the incident, although one vehicle was struck by gunfire.

According to information released by the Madison Police Department, officers were working in the downtown area as part of the State Street initiative when they heard approximately 10 gunshots fired nearby at about 2:46 a.m.

The gunfire prompted officers to investigate the surrounding area. Police determined that at least one vehicle had been struck by the shots, but there were no known reports of people being injured.

Officers returned to the area later during daylight hours as investigators continued working to establish what happened and where the shots originated. During the follow-up investigation, police recovered a firearm near the reported shooting scene.

The Madison Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit is handling the investigation. Authorities have not released information identifying a suspect, and additional details about what led to the gunfire remain limited.

The incident has drawn attention because of its location in the downtown Madison area, but authorities have not indicated that a school was targeted or that the gunfire occurred at a school. At this stage, there is also no indication from the available police information that this was a school shooting.

The incident should therefore be distinguished from the December 2024 shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. That earlier attack occurred on December 16, 2024, when a 15-year-old student opened fire inside the school, killing a teacher and another student and injuring six other people before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Madison police continue to investigate the September 1 gunfire and have not yet released further details about a possible motive, suspect or circumstances surrounding the shooting. Investigators are expected to review evidence from the scene as they work to determine who was responsible and why the shots were fired.

For residents and others following the incident, the most important confirmed information at this time is that gunfire was reported in the downtown Madison area, a vehicle was struck, a firearm was recovered, and no injuries were reported. Police have not confirmed a school shooting in Madison today.
