Stanley Andrew Fraind Cause of Death: Beloved Berwick Educator and Former Crestwood Teacher Dies at 84

The Berwick community is mourning the passing of Stanley Andrew Fraind, a longtime educator and former Crestwood High School teacher whose career was devoted to teaching, encouraging and inspiring generations of students. Fraind, affectionately known to many as Stan and Buddy, passed away peacefully at his residence on August 29, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born on June 4, 1942, in Berwick, Pennsylvania, Stanley was the son of the late Steven and Mary (Potochnak) Fraind. He remained closely connected to his hometown throughout his life and built a lasting legacy through his work in education.

Stanley graduated from Berwick High School in 1960 before continuing his education at Bloomsburg University, where he earned his teaching degree. He later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. His academic background reflected his lifelong commitment to learning and his desire to help young people succeed.

His teaching career became one of the defining chapters of his life. In 1970, Stanley began teaching at Crestwood High School, where he spent many years working with students before retiring in 1997. He was certified to teach mathematics, physics and chemistry, subjects that allowed him to share his enthusiasm for science, problem-solving and discovery with countless students.

Beyond the classroom, Stanley was also recognized for embracing technology and new opportunities in education. During his years at Crestwood, he started the school’s computer program, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach at a time when computers were becoming increasingly important in education. His contribution helped introduce students to an emerging area of technology and became another part of the legacy he left at the school.

Those who knew Stanley will remember more than his professional accomplishments. He was a husband, father, uncle, church member and friend whose interests extended well beyond the classroom. He had a particular love for astronomy, finding enjoyment and wonder in learning about the universe. He also had a deep affection for dogs, including his beloved companion, Princess Snuggles.

Stanley is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Mutarelli, whom he married on August 2, 1980, and his daughter, Lori Christine Fraind of Berwick. He is also survived by nephews Bobby Buehler, Joseph Yachimowski and Steve Friand, as well as nieces Maryann Buehler and Cindy Maczuga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Steve “Sonny” Fraind, and his sisters Marion Yachimowski and Maxine Buehler.

Stanley was a member of Cross Point Bible Church, formerly known as Berwick Bible Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. His funeral service will be held at the church on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Elan Memorial Park.

The news of Stanley Fraind’s death marks the loss of a respected Berwick educator whose influence extended far beyond his years in the classroom. Former students, colleagues, friends and family members are now remembering a man who dedicated decades to education and took pride in helping young people learn and grow.
